To start the game, have your dog stay in one spot. While they’re watching, place a small amount of food or their favorite toy at the other end of the room. When you release your dog, say “find it.” After a few repetitions, they’ll understand what’s expected.
Once your dog seems comfortable with “find it,” you can increase the difficulty. While they’re staying, place the treat or toy out of their line of sight.
The goal of this search activity is to gradually expand to new distances and areas. Initially, keep the game within one or two rooms. Once you’re confident your dog understands the “find it” command, you can move on to hiding things around the house.
Which Hand: The Easiest Nose Work Game
One of the first nose work games to teach your dog is the “Which Hand” game; it’s the simplest way to get your dog accustomed to using their nose instead of their eyes.
Hold a small treat in one hand, close both fists while your dog watches, then present both hands to your dog and ask “Which hand?” If your dog lacks manners and starts nipping or scratching your hand, you may need to work on impulse control alongside this game.
Praise your dog when they gently nudge, place their nose on, or paw at the correct hand – whichever behavior you prefer.
If your dog chooses the wrong hand, open both hands to show them the treat. Do not give the treat for an incorrect choice, but avoid scolding them either. Simply close your fists and try again. When they choose correctly, offer lots of praise and give them the treat. Over time, games like this will help your dog start using their natural talent – their nose – instead of relying on sight.
How to Play the Which Hand Game:
To play the Which Hand Game: Place a treat in one hand while your dog watches; close both fists and extend them toward your dog; ask “Which hand?” and wait for them to choose; if they pick the correct hand, praise them and open your fist to give the treat; if they choose incorrectly, open your hands to show them and try again.
It’s important not to scold or discourage your dog for choosing the wrong hand. The goal of this game is to encourage them to use their nose instead of their eyes, so keeping it fun and rewarding is key.
Nose Work Game: Hiding Things Around the House
Although dogs have a sense of smell 2000 times stronger than ours, they often rely heavily on their eyes. Nose work games help them focus on scents. To teach your dog to use their nose instead of sight, start with a strongly scented object, such as popcorn or smelly treats.
Have your dog sit in a stay position. Place the treat or popcorn around a corner or just out of their line of sight, then tell them to “find it.” Some dogs may get a bit frustrated initially if they can’t find the treat right away.
You can encourage and praise them when they’re close, and even point it out if they’re struggling. The aim is to make it fun and exciting, so be sure to praise your dog enthusiastically when they find it.
When teaching this step to my dog, I made it easier by dragging the object on the floor or creating “scent pads” to help her track it with her nose. As your dog becomes more skilled at sniffing things out, you can increase the difficulty by placing objects on chairs, under rugs, on the couch, or on window sills – anywhere they won’t see it immediately.
The most important thing to remember when teaching your dog basic nose work games is to keep it fun. Dogs can get discouraged if they don’t understand what you’re expecting, so don’t hesitate to guide them in the right direction.
How to Play The Find It Game With Your Dog
The “Find It” game is my favorite nose work game for dogs. It’s the most versatile and the one my dog enjoys the most, and best of all, it’s extremely easy. All you need to do is select some treats and hide them around the house.
How to play “Find It” with your dog: Choose smelly treats for your dog to find; while they’re in a stay position, start hiding treats around the house, placing some in obvious spots and others in more challenging locations like under rugs; once the treats are hidden, tell your dog to “find it”; encourage them as they search and find the treats; if they miss some, you can point or give clues.
To assist dogs when starting this game, you can create scent trails by dragging a piece of kibble or dry treat along the floor, making it easier for them to follow the smell. Skip this step if using treats that don’t drag well, such as cheese.
Nose Work Is Extremely Versatile
Basic nose work games are highly versatile, making them one of the first activities I recommend teaching your dog. They can be done in any environment, with various toys or treats, and require no special equipment – you can play them almost anywhere, indoors or outdoors.
